I think ive just experienced one of the most exciting things in my life..... was on the bus on the way home from school after pbl when suddenly the guy next to me leaned forward cause the guy sitting next to him had started to lean on him... at first i thought they were playing but then i noticed that the guy was shaking uncontrollably, his eyes were kind of fluttering, his fists were clenched, he was drooling... basically he was having a fit.. it was kind of scary cause i suddenly just blanked out! Though i did manage to catch him and stop him from falling down i really didnt know what else to do!
Thankfully there was a lady who seemed to know what to do and told me to turn him to his side (for those interested and dont know yet, its to ensure that if he happened to vomit only one of his lungs would get 'filled' as apposed to both if he were to lie flat). All i could think of was stuffing something in his mouth so he wouldnt bite his tongue but thankfully i didnt do it cause the doctor said its causes more harm than good.
Anyway, it was kind of interesting cause his entire body was really tensed up and rigid (and we were talking abt something like it in PBL a while ago...erm...upper motor neuron damage??? doubt it...) and after the fit started to subside i could feel his whole body loosen up and become limp. Yeah so we lay him on the floor and rushed him to the nearest clinic (thankfully there was one on the bus route along bukit timah). After a while he suddenly regained his senses but he was really surprised to find himself lying on the floor... Kind of amazing really...like he didnt have any memory of what had happened for the past 4-5mins. So yeah we managed to convince him to go to the clinic (he was reluctant at first or maybe he just wasnt lucid) and the doctor gave him some meds (apparently the guy knew abt his fits and just hadnt taken his medication that day or something) and after that it was all fine. The nice lady and her husband, who helped me support him to the clinic, even gave the guy $10 to take a cab back (cause he had no money) and the doctor didnt charge for the medication! :D!
But yeah, what really worries me is how i didnt know how to react at all! i think i would have just stood there dumbly holding the guy up if the lady hadnt told me to me to turn him to his side... i guess im not expected to know exactly what to do yet being only an M1 (even though we r first aid certified) but i expected myself to at least know some basic stuff...haha...maybe i shouldnt have told the lady and her husband (after we had sent the guy home in a cab) that i was a med student in NUS... haha... wont be surprised if they send a letter telling them how lousy their med students r....all cause of me....hahahahaha! And i guess i really cant do emergency medicine... oh well...
