Oh Dear

~!~

Lecturer: I don't want all of you who don't have Biology background to get lost in translation like Eddie Murphy...
Student: Huh... he acted in that meh?
Lecturer: Oh, no ah, uh... Bill Murray ah?
Student: Uh. Don't know.
Lecture Theatre: ...

-----------

Lecturer: You see, a lack of interaction between sensory receptors and adenosine causes you to be alert! So caffeine actually aids this process!
Student: Oh.
Lecturer: And look at cGMP, it aids smooth muscles relaxation and thus helps in hypertension! In order to prevent the hydrolysis of cGMP, one has to inhibit the action of phosphodiasterase, and thus the industry has come up with ways to form a molecule that looks like cGMP! Unfortunately, this has failed horribly... but hey, it led to the formation of Viagra! And thus Viagra was borned!
Student: Ohhhh.... so Viagra helps you to relax?
Lecture Theatre: ...

----------

Lecturer: You see... therefore by the above mechanisms DNA fidelity is conserved! No more infidelity!
Student: Huh... got male and female DNA one ah?
Lecture Theatre: ...

Cool Stuff

~Serious!~

I was thinking: If you have a beam of light, and it goes through a single slit, you get a single slit diffraction.

Two slits? Interference pattern seen!

Let's say you have many many many slits, then you have a diffraction grating, so you get a many slit diffraction pattern!

And... if we say the diffraction grating has an infinite number of slits? Will we still get a many slit diffraction pattern?

NO! A grating with so many slits, is a NO SLIT! This means there is no grating present between the light and the screen, but simply plain air!

The strange thing is, if you do the math, it tells you that if there is no grating present (i.e. infinite slits), then... light travels in an infinite number of ways before getting to the screen!

But heck, doesn't light travel in a straight line?

Well. Truth is, it doesn't!

LIFE IS SO... weird.

Give thanks

Today, marc and i went for the xin nian kuai le project where we went to this housing estate (made up of single room apartments) to bring chinese new year cheer to the residents there. Most of the residents were old folks and they seemed to live alone in the flats, but some of the apartments had a family living in the single room....Yeah...it was really quite a new experience for me...cause ive never really been to a single room flat and never realised how small they really are. I didnt really get to see the inside of the flat but from the outside it looked pretty cramped. And i cant imagine how it would be like having to stay in on if 3 generations stayed in the same one.

On another note, it was also really great to see how happy the residents were just to see us. Many of them invited us into their homes (but we couldnt cause we were told not to...) and a few even wanted to give us stuff back. Sometimes i feel that old people are more grateful for such little acts of kindness. Heh...i guess its cause they've lived for a longer time and kind of know how tough life can be at times. It really quite sad to know that so many old folks live on their own though...and i dont think its cause they dont have children...

Anyway it really was quite an eye-opening experience for me and made me realise how fortunate most of us are and how much i take for granted....really should give thanks for all i have more often...
